Concrete remains the backbone of modern civil infrastructure, but traditional Portland cement production accounts for roughly 8% of global carbon emissions. In Portugal, contractors and structural engineers are rapidly adopting low-carbon concrete formulations.

By incorporating industrial byproducts such as ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and pulverized fly ash (PFA), engineers can reduce embodied carbon in structural foundations by up to 50% without compromising compressive strength.
